Stacking The Shelves - New Books This Week!

Stacking The Shelves is hosted at Tynga's Reviews.

Can't Sleep, Write Now by Lucien Edwards -- I'm a bad sleeper. I constantly suffer from broken sleep; you know when you wake up at 3 a.m./can't get back to sleep again/feel like death warmed up the next day - that's me! Usually when I wake in the middle of the night I reach for my phone - and end up reading celebrity gossip for an hour or so. I thought this journal -which contains writing prompts - might be a more constructive way to use my (night) time.

The Reunion by Amy Silver -- Did you know that Amy Silver is the pseudonym of Paula Hawkins of  The Girl on the Train fame? No. Well, now you do. This book has been on my radar for ages - but I only recently got around to picking up a copy. I loved The Girl on the Train so I'm hoping for good things from this one too!

Disclaimer by Renee Knight (photo below)-- I got this one for review this week and I can't wait to read it. I'm all about psychological thrillers right now and this one sounds like a winner. From Goodreads: A remarkable debut in the vein of Before I Go to Sleep—and already an international sensation—Disclaimer is a brilliantly conceived, deeply unsettling psychological thriller about a woman haunted by secrets, the consuming desire for revenge, and the terrible price we pay when we try to hide the truth.

Deliciously Ella by Ella Woodward -- I only recently discovered Ella Woodward's blog Deliciously Ella but I was immediately hooked and had this book on pre-order. It's full of delicious healthy eating ideas - and all the recipes seem so easy to make which is a bonus! I'm a vegetarian as are all the recipes in this book, so I reckon I'll be cooking up a storm pretty soon. My sister spied my copy of this book and immediately made the flapjacks, which she gives a thumbs up!

I LOVE the sound of this book -- here's the description from Goodreads:

Postbellum America makes for a haunting backdrop in this historical and supernatural tale of moonlit cemeteries, masked balls, cunning mediums, and terrifying secrets waiting to be unearthed by an intrepid crime reporter.

The year is 1869, and the Civil War haunts the city of Philadelphia like a stubborn ghost. Mothers in black continue to mourn their lost sons. Photographs of the dead adorn dim sitting rooms. Maimed and broken men roam the streets. One of those men is Edward Clark, who is still tormented by what he saw during the war. Also constantly in his thoughts is another, more distant tragedy--the murder of his mother at the hands of his father, the famed magician Magellan Holmes...a crime that Edward witnessed when he was only ten.

Now a crime reporter for one of the city's largest newspapers, Edward is asked to use his knowledge of illusions and visual trickery to expose the influx of mediums that descended on Philadelphia in the wake of the war. His first target is Mrs. Lucy Collins, a young widow who uses old-fashioned sleight of hand to prey on grieving families. Soon, Edward and Lucy become entwined in the murder of Lenora Grimes Pastor, the city's most highly regarded--and by all accounts, legitimate--medium, who dies mid-seance. With their reputations and livelihoods at risk, Edward and Lucy set out to find the real killer, and in the process unearth a terrifying hive of secrets that reaches well beyond Mrs. Pastor.

Blending historical detail with flights of fancy, "Things Half in Shadow" is a riveting thriller where "Medium" and "The Sixth Sense" meet "The Alienist"--and where nothing is quite as it seems...

Awesome books! You are so right about Things in Half Shadow…I love the sound of it! I will have to find it on Netgalley; plus, it takes place in Philadelphia??! I love books that take place here in Philly since I am only 10 minutes away and grew up exploring the city. Thanks for the heads up about this one. I had no idea Paula Hawkins had a pseudonym. I will have to look into that book. Also, your journal of writing prompts is a great idea. I am also a really, really bad sleeper. I suffered from chronic insomnia a few years ago. It's the WORST. I have gotten better, but I still wake up multiple times a night. This journal seems perfect for insomniacs. Have a great weekend, Leanna!

  10. I saw (on Goodreads!) It's definitely her. I read it in an interview a while back & she's now listed as Paula Hawkins (in brackets) on Goodreads. Sounds like a really good read so I'm hoping I'll like it just as much as The Girl on the Train! :)
