Blog Tour: Character Interview with Jesse & Ren from The Sound by Sarah Alderson.

The Sound by Sarah Alderson || Release date: August 1st 2013

When aspiring music journalist Ren Kingston takes a job nannying for a wealthy family on the exclusive island of Nantucket, playground for Boston's elite, she's hoping for a low-key summer reading books and blogging about bands. Boys are firmly off the agenda.

What she doesn't count on is falling in with a bunch of party-loving private school kids who are hiding some dark secrets, falling (possibly) in love with the local bad boy, and falling out with a dangerous serial killer...

The gripping new stand-alone novel from the author of Hunting Lila. Out August 2013

Character Interview with Jesse & Ren from The Sound

Describe each other in five words:

Jesse: Ren, hmmm, let me see: music-obsessive, book-lover, fearless, hilarious, smoking-hot.

Ren: best kisser in the world? No um: musician, brother, loyal, hot, HERO (capital letters for that one please).

What was the first thing you thought when Ren walked into the bike store?

She crept up on me. I was surprised to see her. But the first thing I noticed about her was her eyes – they’re so blue. Then her accent. She was there to rent a bike. Then I noticed her legs – I mean, her shorts were short. And finally I thought to myself, this girl needs to wear a helmet as it was clear the last time she rode a bike was with stabilizers.

What was your first thought Ren, when you saw Jesse?

Um, did I walk onto the set of a porn film? I mean, he was wearing just a pair of jeans and was covered in sweat and grime and was holding a tyre in one hand and a spanner thing in the other. Not that I was paying much attention to what he was holding. Let’s just say thoughts deserted me, as did speech.

In a movie of your lives, who would play you?

Jesse: Ahhhh, I don’t know. I like the classics. You know, a young (slim) Marlon Brando or James Dean please.

Ren: Oh yeah, or Christian Bale. I love Emma Stone. And Jennifer Lawrence. Just give me a bow and arrow and I could totally be her.

Jesse you’ve had a tough year, what was the high point and what was the low?

The low point I think is documented in The Sound but that was…yeah, that was a pretty bad time. The six months I was away from home before I met Ren are not a time I like to remember either. But there were a few high points: going fishing with Ren and watching her face when it came to hooking live bait, teaching her to play guitar, watching her ride a bike on the wrong side of the road and fly into a bush…no, just kidding…the high point was definitely when the cop said she had to stay.

Ren, you’ve had an interesting time of it when it comes to boys this year, what have you learned?

That no boy should ever be trusted, especially not the preppy ones who have first names that sound like last names and who wear deck shoes and their hair in a side parting.

Jesse: hey, what about me? You can trust me.
Ren: Not at first. You were keeping so many secrets.

Jesse: Ok, fair enough, but I never lied to you. You lied ;)

Ren: Also I learned that you should trust your own inner voice and not the voice of your best friend who is thousands of miles away and harassing you via Facebook.

Ren, you’re a nanny slash music blogger – where can we find your playlists / blog?

Yes I am! My Spotify playlists are all here:

What next for you two?

Court cases, more gigs, more writing, more…
