Waiting on Wednesday #2 - The Carrie Diaries by Candace Bushnell.

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted at Breaking the Spine that spotlights eagerly awaited upcoming releases.

This weeks selection is:
The Carrie Diaries - Candace Bushnell
Harper Teen publishing
Hardcover, 400 pages
Ages: 14 and up
Release date: April 27th 2010

The Carrie Diaries is the coming-of-age story of one of the most iconic characters of our generation.

Before Sex and the City, Carrie Bradshaw was a small-town girl who knew she wanted more. She's ready for real life to start, but first she must navigate her senior year of high school. Up until now, Carrie and her friends have been inseparable. Then Sebastian Kydd comes into the picture, and a friend's betrayal makes her question everything.

With an unforgettable cast of characters, The Carrie Diaries is the story of how a regular girl learns to think for herself and evolves into a sharp, insightful writer. Readers will learn about her family background, how she found her writing voice, and the indelible impression her early friendships and relationships left on her. Through adventures both audacious and poignant, we'll see what brings Carrie to her beloved New York City, where her new life begins.

You can read an excerpt from the book here

I like a little light reading from time to time, and I'm a big fan of Sex and the City, so this fits the bill.  However, this is being marketed towards a young adult audience, and since it's set in the eighties, I'm just wondering how appealing it will be to that audience, or if it will find a place instead with older readers who just love young adult literature (like me!)

I've posted the US and UK covers for the book.  I'm not overly impressed with either of them.  I had hoped for something a little more fabulous, but at a push I guess the US cover is marginally better.

Now, link me up with your finds. I love finding out about new releases!

  4. I've never read any Sex & the City related books even though I love the show. I've always been annoyed with the way Carrie writes on the show, so I never bothered to check anything out. Oh, well... I'm waiting for this: http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51Bz%2BItypRL._SS500_.jpg

I'm almost done with The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo since it's been very hard to put down, and I have a feeling the second book will be like that too, which means I need this one to be released already! lol.

  5. I don't read much YA, but I'm a huge SATC fan, so this one's going on my list! I agree...I think the 80s setting will be more appealing/resonate more with an older audience (like myself!)

  7. I am considering getting myself a copy of this when it comes out - as I was a fan of the show - but I am really confused as to who their target audience is... most teens are too young to have watched SatC back in the day... I guess it is one of those things that has lived beyond the show!

  9. I will check out all your picks now!

Jill & Kay - I'm also confused as to who this book will appeal too. It's being targeted at teenagers, but I'm pretty sure most of them won't have watched the show (maybe they'll have seen the movie though). I'm also pretty sure that flashbacks to the 80's won't appeal to a younger audience, but we'll just have to wait and see, I guess!

I'm working on a new comment system right now which will enable me to reply to you all directly. Unfortunately it's not compatible with this template, so it looks like the pretty template might have to go. Expect some changes & wish me luck. I'm not too good at this stuff, and I'm just hoping I don't delete the entire blog!

  12. I will be interesting to see where Carrie got her start!! :) It definitely will appeal to me, being set in the 80s, I grew up in those good ol' days! :)

  13. @Kris & Rhiana- now that I've been looking at them all day, the covers are growing on me. Kinda. haha!

  14. Honestly, the book wasn't that great. There's only so much whining a reader can take!

I hadn't seen the UK cover before and even though it fits the book so much better, the US cover is cuter.

  15. @Kelsey - I noticed a while back that you'd received a copy of the book. Lucky! Whining doesn't sound good though. I was expecting a fun, light read. I'll be interested to read your review if you do one for this.
